Used it to trace a broken dog fence wire. It took a little bit of trial and error to get the grounding right (the manual could be slightly clearer on this), but once set up, it pinpointed the break perfectly.
How to Trace a Fault
- Isolate the Circuit: Ensure the mains power is switched off if working on standard electrical circuits. Disconnect the target wire from its control box (e.g., irrigation controller or dog fence transmitter).
- Connect the Transmitter: Attach the red crocodile clip to the target wire and the black clip to an independent earth ground (using the provided grounding rod in the soil).
- Set the Signal: Turn on the transmitter and select your desired signal frequency and power level.
- Trace with the Receiver: Turn on the receiver wand. Walk the suspected path of the cable, sweeping the wand side to side. The audio tone and digital display will peak when you are directly over the wire.
- Locate the Fault: Follow the signal until it abruptly stops or drops significantly. This pinpoint location is where the wire break or severe fault has occurred. Dig here to repair.
